Subject-verb agreement: skip the prepositional phrase

SATReading and Writing

The tip

In Standard English Conventions questions, cross out phrases starting with 'of,' 'in,' or 'with' to find the real subject. Then match the verb to that subject. Next SAT date after Nov 7 is Dec 5, with registration due Nov 20.

Reveal answer

Answer: B. is

The subject is 'collection,' which is singular. 'Of short stories by local high school writers' is a prepositional phrase and does not change the subject. A singular subject needs 'is.'
