Deadline day: percent up, then percent down is NOT a wash

SATMath

The tip

Today, Oct 23, is the regular registration deadline for the Nov 7 SAT (11:59 p.m. ET). Late registration with a fee runs to Oct 27. On percent questions, convert each change to a multiplier and multiply: up 20% is x1.20, down 20% is x0.80.

Try it

A jacket's price is increased by 20%, and the new price is then decreased by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

  • A80%
  • B96%
  • C100%
  • D104%
Reveal answer

Answer: B. 96%

Multiply the factors: 1.20 x 0.80 = 0.96. So the final price is 96% of the original, 4% less. Example: $100 becomes $120, then $120 x 0.80 = $96.
