ACT Science: read the trend, then estimate between data points

ACTScience

The tip

ACT Science is an optional add-on on the enhanced ACT, so check whether your colleges want it before you register. If you take it, most questions are about reading trends in tables and graphs, not memorized science.

Try it

A student measured how long a sugar cube took to dissolve in water at different temperatures: 20 C, 60 s; 30 C, 45 s; 40 C, 30 s; 50 C, 15 s. Based on the data, about how long would the cube take to dissolve at 35 C?

  • AAbout 25 s
  • BAbout 38 s
  • CAbout 50 s
  • DAbout 60 s
Reveal answer

Answer: B. About 38 s

Time drops by 15 s for every 10 C increase. 35 C is halfway between 30 C (45 s) and 40 C (30 s), so the time is about halfway: (45 + 30) / 2 = 37.5 s, closest to 38 s.
