AP planning works best as a four-year map rather than a series of spring scrambles. The right sequence depends on three things: the student's readiness, each course's real prerequisites, and the rules of the particular school — many North Jersey high schools gate AP access by grade level or prior-course performance.

Readiness signals, subject by subject
- AP Calculus AB/BC follows precalculus — comfort with functions and trigonometry is the honest prerequisite, whatever the course catalog says.
- AP Biology and AP Chemistry assume the first-year course in the same subject; taking them cold is the most common source of science-AP struggle.
- AP Physics 1 is algebra-based, but fluency with algebraic manipulation under time pressure is what separates comfortable students from overwhelmed ones.
- AP U.S. History and AP English Language are reading- and writing-volume courses; students who handled Honors English/history workloads well are ready.
Quality over quantity, always

A student who graduates with four APs, all in strength areas, all with strong grades and scores, has a better transcript than one with eight APs and a trail of Bs and 2s. Can freshmen take AP courses?

Is it bad to take no APs until junior year?
Not at all — that is the standard pattern at many schools, and colleges read course choices against what each school allows in each grade. A strong Honors record through 10th grade is exactly the expected preparation.
Which AP is the best first one?
The gentlest common entries are AP Human Geography, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Psychology — lighter prerequisite chains and manageable reading loads. The best first AP, though, is one in the student's strongest subject.
How many APs should a student have by graduation?
There is no universal number; it depends on the school's offerings and the student's goals. Competitive applicants to selective colleges often finish with roughly four to eight, concentrated where they are strongest — but coherence and grades beat count.
