AP Physics 1 is algebra-based physics — no calculus required — and it is famous for a particular kind of surprise: strong math students discovering that the exam wants reasoning in sentences as much as computation. It is a course about explaining why the world moves the way it does, with numbers as supporting evidence.

Forces and energy (Units 2–3) together account for roughly 40% of the exam — the course is won or lost on free-body diagrams and energy conservation. Fluids, added in the course's recent revision, now closes the year.

A month-by-month preparation timeline

September–OctoberKinematics — graphs, not just equations. Reading a velocity-time graph fluently is the single most reusable skill in the course.
November–DecemberForces. Free-body diagrams become a daily discipline; the exam's hardest questions are usually force questions asked conceptually ("compare the tensions…").
January–FebruaryEnergy and momentum — the reasoning core. "Which principle applies and why" beats formula-hunting; conservation arguments in full sentences are exactly what FRQ rubrics pay for.
MarchRotation and oscillations. Rotation reuses every earlier concept with new symbols — students who map τ to F and I to m move fast. First timed sections happen now.
AprilFluids, then full timed exams. The experimental-design FRQ deserves targeted practice: describe a procedure, identify variables, explain how to reduce error.
MayFinal pass through representations — graphs, diagrams, equations, sentences — and the classic "justify your answer" drills. Then rest.

The five mistakes we see most

  1. Equation-hunting. Grabbing a formula before identifying the governing principle produces fast wrong answers; the exam is built to punish it.
  2. Sloppy free-body diagrams. A wrong diagram makes everything after it wrong; a right one often is the answer.
  3. Writing math where words are asked. "Justify in terms of forces" scored with only algebra earns partial credit at best. Physics sentences are a trained skill.
  4. Underestimating the course because it's "only algebra." The math is light; the reasoning is the hardest of the introductory APs. Confidence built on computation alone cracks in November.
  5. Skipping experimental design. One FRQ each year asks students to design or critique an experiment; it is the most practice-sensitive question type on the paper.

How Physics 1 interacts with GPA and course load

Physics 1 is commonly a junior or senior science, taken alongside precalculus or beyond — concurrent Algebra 2 works at some schools but leaves trig-based projectile work feeling early. Its weekly load is moderate but conceptual: fewer hours than AP Chemistry for most students, with more of them spent thinking than grinding. That makes it a reasonable rigor addition to an already full schedule — with the usual caveat that the whole-schedule math comes first. For future engineers, it is also the natural on-ramp to Physics C later.

Frequently asked questions

Does AP Physics 1 require calculus?

No — it is explicitly algebra-based. Comfort with algebra and basic trigonometry is what matters; the reasoning, not the math, is the challenge.

What math should a student have finished first?

Most students do best taking it with precalculus or later. Concurrent Algebra 2 is workable at some schools, but the trigonometry in projectile and force problems arrives early.

Why do strong math students sometimes struggle in Physics 1?

Because half the exam rewards verbal reasoning — justifying which principle applies and why — rather than computation. Students who practice writing physics arguments close that gap quickly.

What are the free-response questions like?

Four questions in 100 minutes, in defined styles: a mathematical-routines problem, translation between representations, an experimental-design question, and a qualitative/quantitative translation. Each rewards structured, sentence-level justification.

Is fluids really on the exam now?

Yes — the revised course framework includes Unit 8, Fluids, weighted at 10–15% of the exam. Older prep books that stop at oscillations are missing a scored unit.
