AP Calculus AB & BC

AP Calculus is the summit of most high school math sequences, and for students across Morris and Somerset County it is often the single most consequential AP choice — it anchors the senior (or junior) schedule, colleges read it as the strongest available math signal, and its two flavors, AB and BC, are frequently misunderstood. AB covers roughly a college semester of calculus; BC covers the AB material and two further units at a faster pace.

Format change coming in May 2027 The College Board has announced that "the number of multiple-choice questions and the timing on the AP Calculus AB and BC Exams will also be updated, starting with the May 2027 exams." Students preparing for the 2027 administration should expect the structure above to shift; this guide will be updated when the new specification is published.

Units and weighting

The AB exam draws most heavily on integration (Units 6 and 8) and the analytical applications of derivatives (Unit 5). On the BC exam, the early material compresses to make room for the two BC-only units — and infinite series alone carries 17–18% of the exam.

A month-by-month preparation timeline

September–OctoberLimits and derivatives land fast; the real work is keeping precalculus fluency (algebra, trig identities) from becoming the bottleneck. Weak algebra shows up here first.
November–DecemberDerivative applications — related rates, optimization. These word problems reward a written setup routine: draw, label, differentiate. Winter break is the natural moment to patch any Unit 1–3 gaps.
January–FebruaryIntegration begins; the Fundamental Theorem is the course's hinge. Students who narrate what an integral means (accumulation) rather than just computing it handle the FRQs far better in spring.
MarchAB: differential equations and areas/volumes. BC: series convergence — the unit that decides many BC scores. First timed full-section practice belongs here, not in April.
AprilFull practice exams under real timing, alternating calculator and no-calculator blocks. FRQ scoring guidelines from released exams teach exactly what earns points — especially justification language.
MayLight review of the FRQ greatest hits (justify a maximum, interpret a definite integral, set up a volume). Sleep beats cramming for a reasoning exam.

The five mistakes we see most

  1. Blaming calculus for algebra errors. Most lost points in the fall are dropped signs and fraction slips from precalculus, not new material.
  2. Practicing only with a calculator. Two-thirds of the multiple-choice score comes from the no-calculator part; fluency without the machine has to be trained deliberately.
  3. Writing answers without justification. FRQ rubrics award points for stated reasoning — "f′ changes sign from positive to negative" — not just the right number.
  4. Choosing BC for the label. BC is the right course for students who finished precalculus strong and genuinely enjoy the subject; taken for prestige alone, its pace punishes.
  5. Starting timed practice in late April. Pacing is a trained skill; the first full timed section should happen in March.

How Calculus interacts with GPA and course load

Calculus is usually the heaviest math workload on the schedule, and it arrives in junior or senior year alongside other APs. On common weighting systems an AP grade carries a +1.0 bonus, which softens the GPA cost of a B — but the deeper consideration is time: three to five hours of genuine weekly practice, more near exams. A student choosing between AB with mastery and BC with survival should usually choose AB; colleges respect both, and the AB-then-college-calculus path is a well-worn road. The Rigor vs. GPA framework applies here more than anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Should a student take AB or BC?

BC suits students who finished precalculus with strong grades and comfort, especially future STEM majors; AB is the right challenge for most others. BC covers everything in AB plus parametric/polar/vector functions and infinite series at a faster pace — and students may not take both exams in the same year.

Is a graphing calculator required?

Parts of both exams require one, and parts prohibit one — each section is split. Practicing both modes matters, because the no-calculator portions carry twice the weight of the calculator portions in each section.

What changes in the May 2027 Calculus exams?

How much homework does AP Calculus involve?

Frequently — calculus has among the most generous credit policies, and BC scores can earn credit for two semesters at many institutions. Each college publishes its own thresholds; the College Board's credit-policy search shows any school's rule.
