The SAT is fully digital, and the format is meaningfully different from the paper test that parents remember. Here's what New Jersey students taking the SAT in 2026 need to know.
The format at a glance
- Total time: about 2 hours 14 minutes — nearly an hour shorter than the old paper SAT.
- Two sections: Reading & Writing (54 questions, 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions, 70 minutes).
- Two modules per section: the test is adaptive — how you perform on the first module determines the difficulty of your second module.
- Calculator allowed throughout Math, with the Desmos graphing calculator built into the testing app.
- Scoring: still on the familiar 400–1600 scale, and scores come back in days, not weeks.
What "adaptive" really means for your strategy
Because the second module's difficulty depends on your first-module performance, a strong start matters more than ever. Students who rush or make careless errors early can get routed to the easier second module, which caps the maximum score they can earn. Training accuracy under time pressure — not just content knowledge — is now a core part of SAT prep.
Reading & Writing: shorter passages, more of them
Gone are the long, multi-question passages. Every question now has its own short passage (25–150 words). This rewards students who can shift contexts quickly and punishes slow warm-up readers. Vocabulary in context, transitions, and evidence-based reasoning are the highest-frequency question types.
Math: word problems and algebra dominate
Algebra and advanced math (linear equations, systems, quadratics, exponentials) make up the bulk of the section. Word problems are longer on the digital SAT relative to pure computation, so reading comprehension matters even in Math. Learning the built-in Desmos calculator deeply is one of the fastest score wins available.
How to prepare
- Start with a real diagnostic. You can't build a plan without knowing your baseline by category.
- Practice on-screen, not on paper. The digital interface, flagging tools, and Desmos need to feel automatic.
- Drill your first-module accuracy. The adaptive format rewards a clean start.
- Take full-length timed tests every few weeks and review every miss until you can explain it.
