Solve systems the fast way: substitute, then stop

SATMath

The tip

On Digital SAT systems questions, read what they actually ask for. If they want x + y, you may not need each value separately, and Desmos can graph both lines in seconds to check your work.

Try it

If 3x + 2y = 16 and x - 2y = 0, what is the value of x + y?

  • A4
  • B5
  • C6

Reveal answer

Answer: C. 6

From x - 2y = 0, x = 2y. Substitute: 3(2y) + 2y = 8y = 16, so y = 2 and x = 4. Then x + y = 6. Check: 3(4) + 2(2) = 16 and 4 - 2(2) = 0.
